Rachel House provides palliative care* for children living with serious and life-limiting illnesses – such as cancer and HIV/AIDS – from some of the most marginalised communities in Jakarta and the surrounding cities of Bekasi, Depok and Tangerang. Our team of nurses and community health workers – supported by a team of national and international medical experts – provide this care free-of-charge for children and families in their own homes. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of the children so they can live free from pain for as many days as they have left. Our Home-Based Palliative Care Services include:
- Specialised nursing and medical care to manage patients’ pain and symptoms
- Psychosocial – emotional, social and spiritual – support for patients and their families
- Ensuring access to necessary medication and the provision of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and oxygen tanks, where needed
- Education for caregivers and family on symptom management and medications
- Provision of essential infant nutrition milk, together with diapers and other basic needs, for patients
- Support in navigating the health system (including BPJS and specialist appointments)
- Where needed, provision of food and meals to support impoverished families of patients
- Respite care via our community health workers to enable primary carers to carry out essential tasks.
