Rachel House nurse Rina passes on her knowledge to the RM IMC interns

“Share your knowledge.  It’s a way to achieve immortality.” – Dalai Lama

Rachel House recently welcomed 10 student nurses from the Rumah Sakit IMC (IMC Hospital), who were invited to shadow our excellent nursing staffas they went about their duties.

Each day, between two and four students would take to the streets of Jakarta with our nurses to conduct all-important home visits across the city. They visited children in their homes, observing practiced nurses increasing comfort levels and administering pain relief.

The remaining students spent time in our office in Slipi, where they attended structured classes with our most experienced staff members, covering topics such as recognizing symptoms, community-based palliative care, as well aspsychosocial and communication issues. They learnt about oral care, hygiene, nutrition, pain and breathlessness through practical demonstrations and teamwork.

The IMC Hospital is a facility where Rachel House once housed a palliative care unit, before recognizing that home visits were the best solution for our young patients, who often want to be treated at home, spending their final days or weeks with family in a familiar environment. RS IMC is a facility Rachel House continues to have strong ties with, as we work towards our mutual aim ofimplementing palliative care more broadly across education facilities, nursing associations, and hospitals, as well as educating the wider community about its importance.
